As a fan of CR I can say that this book is what I wanted. While it doesn't have much in ways of monsters or classes, there are reasons for that one of which would mean Matt would have to pay WOTC to use those names. Matt makes modified versions of things that are available in the MM and the Gunslinger class can be found by "research Matthew Mercer, Gunslinger".Or you can just type in Matthew Mercer on DMSGuild and you'll find his original classes for the game that he's created for the game.It took Matt over a year to write this book and truth be told, it was well worth the wait.I love lore and this gives me plenty of it to work with. I've actually figured out many things for my own campaign and while there isn't much in ways of monsters or items, Matt uses most of the items from Pathfinder and D&D for his campaigns and the monsters are variants of those found in the MM and DM handbook. Most you can find through researching Critrolestats to help fill in the gaps and Matt tries to share information as often as possible.The truth of the matter is this book is for those who want more of Tal'Dorei to expand their own world of D&D. While it may not have EVERYTHING you want it to from the show, and the price tag is a bit steep for a 142 page guide, the book is worth the price. It expands the world of Critical Role, gives you a few awesome items, and even gives you the means to create characters and groups within your own stories.All in all, I enjoy this book, I read it as often as I can when I'm not writing my own stories and if you're a fan I'd say it's well worth the time and money.

Matthew Mercer has once again gone above and beyond the expectations with this guide. All of us who are fans of their show (CR) wanted an in in-depth guide to the world of Taldorei, and we received so much more. The scope of the creative world that they now live in is realized in this full color guide that wil take your breath away with the amount of detail covered.:What to expect:-Gods-Cities-People-Vestiges-Factions-New racesIf you ever wanted to play D&D in the world that Vox Machina is running through, this is your chance. Pros:Huge fan of the the show. This guide is hopefully the first of many. This book has many hooks in Matt's universe to explore. None are in detail, so this book is exactly what it says, a setting. Don't expect a walkthrough campaign or quest. Great depth on Gods/Factions/Towns/Regions. Writing is good. Love the cover and map.Cons:The artwork is hit and miss. There is so much fan art, i expected top notch work. The sticky adhesive left a circular stain on my poster. Expected more writing on Vox Machina. Character profiles and history, but maybe that will come later. Again, its a Campaign setting, so I can't expect everything.Buy this book if you love CR! Can't wait for the artbook and comic in print!
If you're a fan of the show, or just somebody looking for a well-thought-out Campaign Setting with which to run your game. I highly recommend this one. It's a labor of love, made my Matthew Mercer towards the end of his 5 year campaign he ran with a bunch of his friends in the voice-over industry.Included are:- Factions that are at work in the continent of Tal'Dorei- A rich history that you can embellish and mold for your world.- Cities that feel alive, with characters and even adventure ideas- World-Inspired Class Archetypes- Magic Items (Vestiges) That were used in the show- A Fantastic World MapAll in all, i was very satisfied with this as a purchase. I don't watch the show religiously like some people do, but even then there are some details in here that I love, and I am now using this world for my own game at home. It's been wonderful to be able to refer to the book in certain situations. And the way it's been written you have all you need to know to start writing your own adventures with Matt's colorful cast of characters.A solid 5/5.
I've just received this in the mail yesterday and I must say the attention to detail in the descriptions of the world and character options is great (and aren't game-breaking)! I can't wait for more books from Mercer!
An absolute must for every Critical Role fan. Gorgeous artwork throughout. Hopefully I can convince our DM to let us journey to Tal'Dorei for a mission or two... either way, it's so fun to be able to peak into the history and elements of this place Mercer created and see how vast and detailed it truly is!This is a perfect gift for RPGers looking to journey to a new continent or for fans interested in knowing more about the culture and history of Tal'Dorei and its people. This is not a linear campaign guide, though, as it covers pretty much everything you can think of within the Critical Role universe and sets up DMs for creating multiple diverse campaigns!
If you are a follower of Critical Role and want to DM your own D&D 5e homebrew game, but need some guidance and inspiration, this book is excellent. It's chock full of info, from deities, guilds, people, monsters and encounters, all ready to go. I have already borrowed a couple of concepts from it to put into my own campaign with great success.The book itself is solidly bound and lavishly printed. It's full of maps to guide your party, illustrations to fire your imagination, and narratives to help you plan your encounters. It's easy to read, but packed full of ideas. A 17" x 22" map/poster of Tal'Dorei is included for either use in your campaign, or "age" it a bit and put it in a frame for your wall.My hope is that someday I'll get Matt Mercer to sign my copy ;)
