About the Author
Count Leo Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. Orphaned at nine, he was brought up by an elderly aunt and educated by French tutors until he matriculated at Kazan University in 1844. In 1847, he gave up his studies and, after several aimless years, volunteered for military duty in the army, serving as a junior officer in the Crimean War before retiring in 1857. In 1862, Tolstoy married Sophie Behrs, a marriage that was to become, for him, bitterly unhappy. His diary, started in 1847, was used for self-study and self-criticism; it served as the source from which he drew much of the material that appeared not only in his great novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina(1877), but also in his shorter works. Seeking religious justification for his life, Tolstoy evolved a new Christianity based upon his own interpretation of the Gospels. Yasnaya Polyana became a mecca for his many converts. At the age of eighty-two, while away from home, the writer suffered a break down in his health in Astapovo, Riazan, and he died there on November 20, 1910.

It changed my perspective on religion, morality, and love. I feel like the truth about so many things was hidden from me in plain sight all this time, and it took the keen eye and experience of Tolstoy to draw back that curtain - and for that I am eternally grateful. This book is dramatically different from his works of fiction, but if you have the opportunity to give this book a chance, please take it (and read it with an open mind), You will not be disappointed.
This collection of works gives the reader a glimpse into the emotional and spiritual life of one of the greatest writers of all time. Tolstoy's spiritual journey from agnosticism to Christianity is chronicled in a very personal autobiography called "confessions". The other writings describe his radical and unorthodox approach to spirituality, as well as his advocacy for nonviolent resistance to power (the latter would inspire figures like Martin Luther King and Gandhi).I would recommend this book to Tolstoy fans, philosophers, theologians, and political activists of all stripes. It's an inspiring read
Tolstoy does speak about sex; but he speaks about it by analyzing male lust and the debauchery caused by it.
This collection of Tolstoy's writings has had a profound impact on my life. Recently, I've been in the same place that Tolstoy describes himself in the beginning of his Confession: stuck in a depression, caused by the despair of death. I've been on my own search for meaning, as I grew up religious, and later had a crisis of faith. Tolstoy helps those like me navigate the rough waters of meaning in life--where it can and cannot be found. Being a man of his time, I think Tolstoy relied too heavily on Reason, like many during the 19th century. I would couple this work with Jonathan Haidt's Happiness Hypothesis.
It's interesting to find out that we all have the same questions no matter who we are: what is the meaning of life and how to live one's life so that at the end of it you are not ashamed of your doings. These are the questions with witch also the great thinkers are trying to cope. It seems that Tolstoy is not in a possession of all answers. Or he has answers which only generate new questions. He was the man of his own era like we all are. He did experience the Crimean war which is nowadays not anymore a vivid memory but did not live long enough to know about WWI and WWII and Stalin purges. Very honest, thoughtful and deeply personal book about what is to be a human being in the context of Tolstoy's life time.
To read this is to reveal the logic of a great thinker's enlightenment about the real science of Christ's thinking and healing even if under the cloud of domination of an establishment and state church. He was brave to write it out to the extent of his excommunication in 1901. It is a thought opener. Pertinent in thie time of growing spirituality and questioning of religion.Frederick R. Andresen, Author of "Walking on Ice, An American Businessman in Russia," over sixteen years in Russian business, six years in residence.
It's quite interesting that some translations/notes were marked in the middle of the pages rather than at the end of the page as a footnote. It actually helps to see the translation right below the paragraph as I'm reading! Also, happy with the fast shipping of the product.
I used this book in Seminary and in my personal research on man's need to believe.
