Nice and big book with many songwriting techniques presented. Great insights. I was expected more examples from (now) legendary songwriters like Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley and other pop/rock legends and bands and less from Katy Perry, Justin Bieber ad so...or their writers...(will they also be legends we shall see)...but that may suit to some folks. Sorry for my possible English writing mistakes.
This is the clearest, most comprehensive book on this subject I have seen yet. The style is extremely readable, and the suggested exercises and practices practically ensure successful song writing.
This is the best book out there for songwriting! I spent so many of my years learning music theory and making subpar songs to the point where I thought writing a good song is luck. I’ve made a red handprint on my forehead, because after every chapter I’d slap my head. Jack is a genius when it comes to music and this book really shows the time under his belt. After reading this book I’ve gained the confidence and know how. I will be taking this knowledge and will use it when I go back to studying all my books again. Thank you Jack.
Great book on songwriting wow a lot of information!
What I like about when Berklee professors write about songwriting, is they actually teach you how to do it, where other books are much more focused on the songwriting business or whatever else that just kinda assumes you have the skills to write a good song... this is a nice thick book with clearly years and years of mastery written down from teaching some of the best songwriters in America. I read some of it and liked it, hoping to read more soon
Really useful information on constructing melodies (which many songwriting books don't cover at all), choosing chords and rhythms -- and putting it together with words (prosody), with examples from very contemporary and classic songs. (For example: He shows how small changes to a melody, like note length or which beat you start on, can bring out an emotion or idea.) Long-time head of Berklee College's Songwriting Department and #1 hit writer, Jack breaks it all down so it's easy to understand and use. There are lots of suggestions at the end of the chapters so you can treat it like a great course (without the 42k/year Berklee tuition) or pick it up and jump in when you're short on inspiration and trying an exercise. Learn all these techniques and then just relax and create...you'll find you have a much broader pool of ideas and possibilities.
