First, the good. Mozart: A Life is pretty short, but packed with analysis of Mozart’s music and some information about his life. The author clearly absolutely loves Mozart and his works. His passion comes through in the writing. You can’t help but really like Mozart, too, while reading it. But, then there’s the not so good. Even though the title indicates the book is a biography of Mozart, it is really more about his works. The author’s intense love of Mozart makes it so you would think he was practically a saint. Anything negative was glossed over. The writing was rather dull most of the time. I would not recommend this book if you want to know about Mozart the person, but it is good if you want to read about his works.
It's refreshing to read a biography of Mozart that treats him as an adult human being. Johnson makes no excuses for Mozart's life and does not great his subject as it he's made of "Dresden china"; instead he gives us the life of a true genius and doesn't why away or avert his eyes when there are rough patches or ugly parts. He doesn't why away from Mozart's money troubles in his last years, however, he explains how these problems were not unique to Mozart, nor does he blame Frau Mozart for the cash flow problems.An all around good general biography, I also highly recommend Mozart at the Gateway to his Fortune by Christoph Wolff. Both that work and this do much to dispel the fiction of the play "Mozart & Salieri" and the film Amadeus. Mozart life was short, alas for us, too short, but it was not a tragedy.
There are tomes on the lives of many composers that can cure insomnia. This book is well written and engaging while not becoming pedantic. Someday I might want more details but this was just great.
Paul Johnson has again given and uncomfortably, at times, human account of another legend.Mozart appears both brilliant and ordinary at the same time.We are left with a clear picture of a gifted innovator who could “play with the band†and lead the orchestra whilst enjoying both high and low society.
I purchased this after watching the movie Amadeus. My wife wanted to know more about Mozart after watching. The book is very informative, although many musical references were over my head with technical jargon. As others have noted, the movie is mostly fiction.
I recently visited Salzburg and Vienna, attended some concerts there and visited the Mozart House museum. Although I have always admired Mozart's music, I became interested in knowing more about the man, the composer, the son and husband. This book fit the bill very well. I learned about the man's character and disposition, his passions, and mode of operation. Even more, I took notes about his musical works -- those I want to listen to and those I want to study further.
Scrumptious short biography, a pleasure to read. Helped me enjoy the music all the more.
This book by Paul Johnson is a concise, but comprehensive, biography of Mozart's short, but extremely productive, life. Like his other biographies of Eisenhower and Napoleon, Johnson writes with extreme accuracy, but doesn't waste the reader's time with needless padding.
