I'm not actually sure how, as a reader, I can rate with stars this book. How do you judge a book by a man who has lost a child? Do you look at the writing style? Or maybe the degree of sorrow the man shows and the amount of contrition he displays when writing about a son - 8 years old - lost in a river rafting accident while on a family vacation? In "Disaster Falls: A Family Story", Stephane Gerson gives the reader a bit of how his family dealt with young Owen's death.Books about the loss of a child seem to be as old as the printed page. The most famous one I can remember is John Gunther's short, sweeping book, "Death Be Not Proud", written after the death of his teenage son, Johnny, from a brain tumor. (It's startling to think that had young John Gunther lived, he'd be well over 85 years old now.) Both elegies to dead sons, Gunther's looks at the last few years of Johnny's life and his death, while Gerson's is about Owen's accidental death in 2008 and the next few years as his family deals with the loss.Owen Gerson was the younger of two sons of Alison and Stephane Gerson. A loving and close family - I slightly knew Alison's mother, Gay, and I remember when Owen was killed - his parents and older brother moved forward, each mourning in different ways. He also writes about the accident itself, putting snippets out until he chooses to cover it in one long chapter. We learn the history of Disaster Falls and those who were killed or injured while going over it, and also about the rafting companies who market and run these trips for "families". But most of the book is about Owen, the author's son, with a part about Stephane Gerson's father, who dies a few years later.Stephane Gerson's book is not an easy read, though it is an honest picture of a man and his family mourning the loss of son.

This is an honest and emotional account of what grief over the loss of a child is; its visceral quality that has a life of its own. I thank Mr Gerson for expressing in heart-rending detail what life is after such a tragedy. Having recently experienced such a loss myself, his words gave form to my own inexpressible and sometimes frightening emotions that overwhelm my life. I copied copiously into my journal passages from this book. I understand that this is not a book for everyone; this family's pain resonates from every page, but it certainly has helped me to recognize and understand some of the disturbing issues I'm wrestling with, and helped me to understand that these are normal and perhaps even universal indicators of grief. This is a searingly honest memoir about the death of a child and its emotional aftermath on the author and his family. Stephane Gerson offers the reader a range of raw and unfolding emotions in beautifully written prose that laid bare Gerson’s experience after the most unimaginable of events. Gerson did a remarkable job of writing about his emotional journey with respect, dignity, honesty and without self-pity. His accounting of how his reactions and feelings compared with his wife’s (Alison), offered an important lesson in grieving and sharing other’s grief. That is, there is no formula or way to anticipate how grief will affect any of us. This is also a profoundly important book because it is largely about healing and moving forward. It is not a “how to” book on grieving, but the reader could learn valuable and positive lessons from how the author and his wife navigated their way through their tragic loss. I had the pleasure of reading this book twice (the second time to prepare for book group) and I will say that I loved it both times. Gerson’s stunning writing style offered layered and often conflicting feelings, which is to say, he so elegantly captured the human experience.

It was not easy to decide to read about the tragedy as huge as a loss of a child. The author began his narrative in an extremely sober and to some extent analytical way. Nevertheless, there is a deep human component in his narration. The book is more like a detective novel slowly collecting all the missing clues and pieces in order to create deeply impressive narrative about ones tragic experience.

this book is a tour de force, giving the reader insight into the experience of losing a child, as well asadditional insights into three generations of the father-son relationship.The book is well written and unflinchingly honest,the author's voice is measured and cerebral, yet reverberates with contained emotion. I learned so much from reading this book -- Ithought before I read it that I knew what it meant to lose a child -- but now I see the even-more-far-reaching consequences ofhow such a painful experience affects one's life, one's marriage, one's relatioship to work, and one's ability to socialize in a meaningful way..

How can I, as a voracious reader, say I love this book? Is it disturbing to say I enjoyed this heartbreaking story? It’s not so much as enjoying it as it is completely immersing myself into this family’s tragedy and losing myself in this fathers loving memorial to his son Owen. I’m currently reading it for the second time for I love it so. Mr. Gerson, if you read this, please know your words have changed me...thank you.

Heart opening memoir: I couldn’t put this book down. It connected me so deeply with my love for my own children and other loved ones. Gerson’s use of language allowed me to feel an intimacy with his experience. I feel tremendous gratitude about being alive. I highly recommend this book.
