I own and have read many Joy Division, New Order, Factory and related books and writings and am pleased to add this release to those as well. This volume is elegant, but perhaps not as solidly constructed as old Factory releases were. The cover boards are somewhat thin for a book of these dimensions, but it certainly hearkens to Factory design aesthetics, if not on a budget, and it also blatantly recalls, Joy Division's Still packaging. Factory designs were paramount to its image and mystique, and I do wish this might have stretched a bit more in that direction with an attempt to fit in to the line up a bit more, but it digress as it's very nice all the same.If you consider yourself a fan of this music and admire the legacy of Factory, I feel most readers and collectors alike will appreciate this release. What I find intriguing with most releases that these groups, their family members, the people intimately behind creating, producing, distributing the original music or from the scene/sters that surrounded the music and the era, even so many years onward, is that there is still so much to be shared from the original days with those further afield, if not generations apart, who admire and find something to discover in even the slightest details or trivial facts and perspectives shared, about this era, the music and the people who created it.Thank you for continuing to strive to release such material and in such completeness, and to open up the very core of private feelings, personal writings and influential details these people were surrounded by, to tell your stories about your lives that flanked these creators' scene and life, and to share the ephemera like gig posters and hand bills with people who could never have seen them or experienced them in the place and time of their initial existence.This book publishes a lot of heavy information not in a written manner, but rather in a visual manner, presenting facsimile copies of handwritten lyrics in startling immediacy by the front-man and flanked by the actual refined and published lyrics known directly by fans from finished releases. It goes further and shares the actual words of fans, scribbled or typed out to Ian, allowing a peek into something only he would have had access to, accolades and requests and budding support for the bands work. It also offers reproductions of influential books Ian owned and various printed matter that was made to promote the band at the outset, some crude, some fan inspired, some just the ho-hum stuff venues churned out. Priceless to some fans today.This is a brilliant and intimate work in a very accessible and affordable format for fans and collectors who cherish and mine this music, and these writings, these words and sounds, for numerous insights and inspiration, loving and loss.
Very useful book to understand the process and the development of the songs made by Joy Division between 1977 and 1980. Debbie Curtis was again very generous to share all these writings of her former husband. A good book to reconnect with the legendary front man of that iconic post-punk band from Manchester.
As a big fan of Joy Division, this collection of high quality photos of original lyric sheets, photos and album art makes this book a MUST HAVE. Thumbing through the pages is almost like holding the actual papers and photos Ian Curtis held when crafting those classic JD tracks. Just buy it, you won't be sorry.
For the fans that wants visual archive of the writing process. The text is insightful, but the images of the writing is really the purpose of the book. As images there is a great insight as to Curtis' process of song writing, and from a fan's perspective it's just cool to see the handwriting of such great songs. Deborah Curtis' forward is honest and resonates as a small addition to her book "Touching From a Distance" which I strongly recommend.
A must for any Joy Division fan, the scans of Ian's notes are a cool look at the band's history and how the lyrics fleshed out between then and the actual recordings.
An outstanding collection of original documents for the serious Joy Division / Ian Curtis fan or researcher. Definitely not for the average bear as this is a collection of his writings without commentary, except for the introduction. I bought the book as I am researching Curtis' creative process and it is perfect for that purpose.
If you're a fan of Joy Division, this is for you. All the lyrics in one spot, many of them along with the handwritten originals next to them. The book is also a nicely constructed piece, the cover is tactile and feels good in the hand.
