Jonathan Feist has worked in many dimensions of the music industry, from stage manager to songwriter, producer to performer, engraver to educator. He is editor in chief of Berklee Press, the book/instructional video publishing division of Berklee College of Music (in partnership with Hal Leonard Corp.), where since 1998 he has helped bring hundreds of pedagogical music products to a worldwide audience. Jonathan is author of the book Project Management for Musicians, and two Berklee Online courses: Project Management for Musicians and Music Notation Using Finale.

This would have been a very useful Kindle book, as I wanted to immediately access specific legal and organizational/management forms.But guess what! YOU have to manually try to copy each bit, and you need a powerful magnifying glass to see the text. You also need to recreate the whole form yourself from scratch manually as there is NO WAY TO PRINT the forms in Kindle.Sure, I wanted to customize them, OR use them verbatim like the song split agreements if they were good enough as is. To add insult to injury, you can't even copy the text out of the "example" forms!!!! Why is that?I don't want to have to spend hours typing the text from the forms, when it would be so easy to just copy it and edit it!!!! This is so ridiculous it just isn't funny. If I'd known this I would NOT have purchased this. Why do we have to reinvent the wheel?!!!If you were thinking of buying this book to immediately access forms that are ready to go, forget it. I have other sources of complete forms so I don't have to reinvent the wheel.While having the content of the forms is useful for considering what you need to do to create your own, the fact the type face is microscopic makes this a royal pain.Hence the two stars. I might just have well gone to a source that has spreadsheets/word docs/PDF ready to go vs having to manually waste a LOT of time trying to decipher the hieroglyphics and build documents from scratch. That was what I thought this book delivered in terms of ready to go forms you can download and use without having to type a "War and Peace" novel, This was THE value add - Who want's to retype something you've PAID for, which was purchased specifically to AVOID having to waste valuable time typing! And to add to it all, I"m here TYPING this review, WASTING MORE TIME.You're better off finding a source that actually delivers what is claimed, and NOT waste hours manually typing and formatting.Not impressed.
Has all the basic forms or ideas to customized forms for all your music business needs. Some of the forms are real basic but the idea of them existing helps one create those that can work for their business more efficiently. Musicians in general have not been good business folk in the past because they just didn't realize that like any other business organizing your forms and your industry is a key to success. This book really helps those who have not been organized that have been working music professionals and those new to the music business. It's truly a great resource. Nothing to read just find the form that fits your situation.
This book has a lot of good information in it which is very useful and helpful to people new to the music industry - it will help you succeed if you are just at a loss for how to work about organizing different aspects of different things. However, I feel like it should probably discuss more in the title of the work how it is more essential/focuses on aspects of working in the recording industry or part of production in music. When I read the title "75 most important documents for modern musicians," I thought it would be forms or documents that could be used generally for all professional musicians, but a good majority of the documents are specialized for particular jobs in the industry. That should be more pronounced either in the title of the book or emphasized in the description of the book...I didn't really feel like it benefited me that much, due to a majority of the forms being geared towards recording and the recording process, or other organizational aspects of recording. I was hoping to find new ways to organize other aspects of being a freelance musician.
This is an interesting collection of forms for the band, music producer, or semi-professional artist.Most of these are available on-line in some form.The benefit of this book is that it gathers the forms in one place, and it clues the musical person to aspects of business that he or she might not think of on his/her own.
Everyone needs to get this book whether your a beginner or a veteran in the music business this book that Jonathan Feist has produced, will help you in all your future music business endeavors.
