Not a journey I would undertake, but gotta admire the perserverance. What’s most amazing is that this voyage was accomplished before modern technologies such as GPS, and has not been replicated since. Also, Ed and his wife Katie taught me how to kayak. Sourpthwest kayaks was my go to place for lessons, rentals, and kayak trips.
Great telling of the voyage itself, but I loved the exploration of the psychology of the individuals who attempt these voyages. From the book: “People can’t handle uncertainty,†says Dr Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University and former president of the American Psychological Association. “You can either look at uncertainty as a challenge and as fascinating and interesting, or look at it with fear. So it’s an impediment to progress.â€
What an incredible story. Through Ed’s journey, the author makes you question your own limits and willingness to find them. It’s an intense look into human nature’s ability to break free of comfort zones. Dave’s clear passion for the sport of kayaking comes through as you can sense the awe that he’s experiencing just writing about the expedition. A highly recommended read.
Pacific Alone is an excellent read for anyone but I think those who will most enjoy it are those who have a strong desire to push their physical limits. The story itself is epic but the intimate view of an adventurer's mindset when facing that which most people will never experience is what makes this book unique. It's well-written and gives a lot of context before and after the journey. Just the right amount of detail to still be a quick read but feel like you have all the background information needed to truly appreciate the story.
Really enjoyed this book. Engrossing and enjoyable, esp. for me as a kayaker. Also Enjoyed the backstory and accounts of other attempts to make the crossing.
Excellent insights in to the mind of an iconic figure
Very personable. Took you all the way to Maui & back. Very detailed in kayaking. Good read.
