For over a year I’ve followed, with interest, Michael Becker’s journey with Stage IV head and neck cancer on Twitter. Finally I decided to buy his book A Walk with Purpose. I was expecting that the entire book would be about his cancer journey but it was much more than that. While the cancer segment was of interest to me I was pleasantly surprised to read about other aspects of Michael’s life. There were things with which I could identify. I’m somewhat of a stock market junkie, live in PA, am familiar with the Delaware Water Gap AT area, spent a good deal of time at the NIH myself, and have a love for animals, topics that kept me reading at a much faster pace than usual. The book had a great flow and, in some ways, it was more like a novel than a memoir. The tenacity with which Michael tackled, and is continuing to tackle, his cancer is nothing less than remarkable. It isn’t for the faint of heart. Nothing was lost in this book. His journey came across in a very real way. I’m so glad I decided to read this bittersweet book.
Michael is a solid individual with great character! What I appreciate so much about him in his journey with cancer is his ability to be so transparent in his fears, hopes, & dreams for he & his family. I read the book twice as I enjoyed learning about his love for biotech when it was not as widely followed as it is now. He met people that I had read about early in my 20's like the CEO from Cephalon. Also enjoyed learning about your influence around the "ASCO Effect" that has become so prominent over the yrs. Appreciated his journey as a father with two daughters as I am in the same position its just that mine are in early teens & I have a younger boy. I connected with him as a father with this memoir. After reading the electronic version, I just bought a paperback copy as I plan to fly to NY before the end of July and get a signed copy from the man himself. Thank you Michael for teaching us about how you have handled your journey with such grace & dignity through cancer while living it every day. Much respect for you sir now & always!
It takes me awhile to finish reading a book. On rare occasion I find one that I can't put down--almost always non-fiction--and I get through it relatively quickly. That's the case with this one by Michael Becker. Part of that is due to the large type and wide spacing and that it's a quick read, but given the subject matter it's also a page-turner for me. I bought it on Amazon after seeing Michael tweet about it.I just finished the book this evening. But the whole time I was reading it I kept thinking about what I wanted to say here about it. I feel compelled. And yet I know that whatever I write here won't be sufficient.Michael and I are acquaintances. We have traveled in the same biotech orbit for many years and came to the life sciences by different, but somewhat similar serendipitous paths.Reading his memoir I gained new insights into the internal ups and downs and twists and turns that are part of the day-to-day life of many a fledgling biotech company. And I gained further validation for the road-less-traveled some of us have taken to get into the life sciences. But most of all, I gained an appreciation and deeper understanding of what life is like for a newly diagnosed cancer patient and the cliched "journey" they go on. It's a journey too many people in my family and in my circle of friends have taken and one I constantly fear fate will someday send me on, but I've never known a chronicle like this one.I'm not going to recommend reading it. It's not for everyone. A lot of biopharma-sector friends should probably read it, though, assuming they haven't already. But I will thank Michael for writing it. For creating a record. For creating a memory. For creating a legacy. For showing us what bravery and courage and love and friendship look like. And for touching me.
My family has had its’ share of cancer stories. My sister is a breast cancer survivor and my Dad recently passed after what could be a record setting battle with ocular melanoma. So, every time I have a pain that I cannot immediately connect with something I did in the gym the day before, I wonder if it is cancer. I then quickly project into the future what will happen and I cannot imagine being as brave and as open as Michael Becker is in his memoir. To be this transparent and honest about who you are and the feelings you are struggling while battling cancer is not something many of us can do. Michael shares everything. Reading the book you are suddenly aware of this sense that he totally trusts you as a friend that he has known all of his life; trusts you with his deepest fears and also his greatest epiphanies. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just those that have been affected by cancer.
I loved Michael's book! I loved how he discussed his life with very personal details. I learned so much more about him, his family and their journey. I think Michael is a true inspiration. I also have to give a shout out to his daughter for her unbelievable strength in sharing her struggle with depression. I am so glad she was so brave because I think it needs to be discussed in society! Furthermore, Michaels wife, Lorie is absolutely amazing. The way she has supported Michael through the most difficult time is something that should be recognized. Well done, all! My ONLY comment would be that the scientific verbiage was a little hard to understand at times, coming from someone not in the field. Super proud of you, Michael!
