Review

Praise for Infinite Tuesday"Beautifully written." —New York Times“Penetrating… As a writer, Nesmith is practical without being conventional. And he riffs on metaphysical topics like ‘non-time moments’ – when portent and symmetry seem to enter our lives – without sounding trippy or losing his relatability. He also abstains from using his pen to settle scores, something from which other celebrity memoirists could learn. In fact, he’s delightfully self-depricating… [Infinite Tuesday is] a nonlinear realm to which [Nesmith] is a distinctly likable, erudite guide.” —Washington Post“In his memoir, Infinite Tuesday, the highlights of [Nesmith’s] career speak for themselves… Jimi Hendrix, who supported the Monkees on their first tour, got the Monkees; John Lennon got the Monkees; Zappa did too. These countercultural icons understood the genius of its premise – simultaneously celebrating and satirizing popular culture, fabricating a faux-Beatlemania to rival Beatlemania itself – and recognized its brilliant execution.” —Wall Street Journal“Reads like the chronicle of a relentless seeker…although Nesmith certainly doesn’t ignore the professional and social collaborations he’s had with Douglas Adams, members of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, actor Jack Nicholson and numerous others.” —Los Angeles Times"This selectively revealing, insightful memoir casts the cerebral Monkee as a spiritual seeker and self-deprecating visionary. Popular culture has barely revealed the tip of the iceberg that is Nesmith….A book—and a life—unlike any other in rock." —Kirkus Reviews (starred)"Nesmith may be most remembered for his role as the stoic guitarist in the Monkees, but his brilliant, candid, and humorous new autobiographical musings give readers a much clearer picture of his originality and inventiveness...Nesmith’s entertaining memoir reveals his creative genius, his canny ability never to take himself too seriously, and his restless questions about the value of spirituality."—Publishers Weekly “The Monkees were the beginning for me, the amazing thing is they were only the beginning for Mike Nesmith. This is the way a genius lives life right.  Great stories of his buddies Hendrix, Timmy Leary, and Douglas Adams, adventures while inventing the music video and changing home video, yogis in California, VR, and why you should never complain about the air conditioning on a private jet.  Nez inspired me when I was 13 and now with this book he continues to inspire me at 61.”—Penn Jillette of “Penn & Teller”   “You know it’s a good book when you quote lines and anecdotes from it, and claim them as your own. Infinite Tuesday is fascinating and funny! In a word, Nezmerizing.”— Jack Handey, author of Deep Thoughts and The Stench of Honolulu   “Mike Nesmith is a pop-culture spirit guide.  Every creative person should take this revealing, hilarious, semi-hallucinogenic trip back in time through all the biggest cultural revolutions of the late 20th century. Nesmith himself was a driving force in many of them. This book is honest, moving, and inspirational.”—Jay Roach, director of Austin Powers and Meet the Parents   “Infinite Tuesday is a picnic in forward motion.  The table is full of gems, big and small, and studded throughout with a full cast of characters.  I am already looking for volume two and, please, let there be one.”—Ed Ruscha   “Nesmith is an artist, adventurer and thinker whose nimble creativity soared far above the appellation he was given: “The smart Monkee.” In Infinite Tuesday, he details the inner forces, from personal to spiritual, that kept him forging ahead –and that created stumbling blocks as well. Unsparing and revealing, this book is an unusual, unforgettable read.” —Ben Fong-Torres   “Nesmith is witty and ironic and has a fund of amazing and often absurd stories. Infinite Tuesday is unlike any other music or movie autobiography.” —Alex Cox, director of Repo Man

I enjoyed this very much. Mike was 'My Monkee', as John was 'My Beatle.' It's so hard to believe/accept, that the bald 74 yr old he is now, was once that handsome, cool, young musician he was back then. And, alas, I, a musician as well, am now 61- wow! Mike is an excellent writer, with an amazing vocabulary, and is deeply introspective, though I think in many ways is too hard on himself. What an amazing and full life! My only comments to the negative are, that I wish he'd included some stories of his relationships with his fellow Monkees. I get that this was but a short chapter in a huge life, but so much of the narrative is based on the concept of being part of what he terms 'a band,' whether a musical endeavor or not. I also get that they were an assembled band, but they did tour and play and record and act together, and there is nothing about the interplay between them, no commentary on Davey's passing, or for that matter his first wife's. Still, he is open, honest, and self-effacing, and the book is well-worth the read. The only other comment is that the book is written in a free, stream of consciousness way, that does occasionally repeat itself a bit, but not too much to detract from a largely excellently crafted book.

Michael Nesmith’s latest book captivates by constructing an intriguing tapestry made up of threads unfettered by the traditional framework of autobiographical writing.Infinite Tuesday is a study of human behavior and relational consequences from the point of view of the author. The reader is nimbly guided through a twisting network of “riffs” on celebrity encounters, family dynamics, spirituality, business, science, and the arts without disorienting or alienating. The narrative is not a chronological one, as much as it is an unfolding of revelations ultimately exposing the intricate interlacing of each chapter.Segments of Mr. Nesmith’s life have been reported on through the years, but for the first time we are shown the roots of many of his achievements and even some of his deficits. While not a saucy tell-all, the author reaches deep into his cache of personal experiences, sharing stories of both fortune and misfortune with care and bravery. Those who are most familiar with Mr. Nesmith as “Mike-The-Monkee” may feel there are gaping omissions in his tale. Much of The Monkees’ story has been written and told in interviews elsewhere over the span of 50 years. I was pleased that there was ample room left for what had not already been chronicled to live and breathe. But for those who question Mr. Nesmith’s reasons and motives for not participating in various reunions and tours, some insight can be found in these pages. That said, Infinite Tuesday is by no means an apology or an excuse. It is, simply put, the Truth of one man.

Mega-boring disconnected ramblings. It so pains me to give this auto-bio a C. Mike's music was such an important part of my life growing up. He was there for a few years along side the Beatles, the Stones and a myriad of his contemporaries, back when rock music had so much meaning to the boomer young like me. Unfortunately, Mike doesn't talk much about his music in this bio, only about his lifelong business pursuits in the arts -- which were mostly lossy failures without any happy endings, narrated with lots of word salad in long text blocks wherein you can't really make out what he's trying to say. He seems to prefer oblique, indirect communication loaded with metaphor, hyperbole, and homily. Add to that a continuous proselytizing to his readers about the glories of `Christian Science` which after a few pages he starts calling simply `Science.` Since `Science` and `science` have widely been established to be completely differing things, this irritates the reader to no end. There's practically no information about the details of Mike's music during or after the Monkees -- just the business side going round and round with no payoff triumph (other than his inheritance payout from his deceased mom who had invented liquid paper). Mike spends the more accessible first quarter of the book (and most of his lifetime) dissing his early 20's experience with the Monkees, largely because it was a joint effort with other musicians, composers, producers and moguls -- this seemed fake and shameful to him in a renaissance time when the records were imagined, composed, arranged, played and sang by the artists themselves, breaking from music industry tradition which had always been collaborative productions like movies and TV. Just ask Elvis -- the singer who wrote only a few songs in his career. Yet many of Mike's greatest songs appeared on the Monkees albums and despite Boyce and Hart's band composing and playing most of the music tracks, the Monkees' amazing lead vocals are there on all the records. Does it matter that much if someone else played on them (just ask Elvis.)
